Lil Nas X opens up about sexuality: “I planned to die with the secret”

ABC/Image Group LALil Nas X exploded on the music scene with his hit song “Old Town Road” and then made another splash a few months later when he revealed that he was gay. That wasn’t always his plan though. Speaking with The Guardian Nas got candid about his decision to come out.

“The honest truth is, I planned to die with the secret,” The 20-year-old admitted.

Born Montero Lamar Hill, Nas grew up in a small conservative community outside of Atlanta, Georgia which greatly influenced his original decision to keep his sexual orientation hidden. After witnessing the scrutiny and judgment that others faced, he did his best to keep up his “straight” appearance.

However, the rapper had a change of heart once he took on his music persona. After confirming that he was seriously considering never coming out as a member of the LGBT community, he shared, “That changed when I became Lil Nas X.”

The “Panini” artist came out as gay following the release of his EP “7” in June 2019, which also happened to be LGBT Pride Month.

“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more. but before this month ends I want y’all to listen closely to c7osure,” he wrote almost nonchalantly in a tweet followed by some emojis, including a rainbow.

The announcement shocked many, which prompted a follow-up tweet from Nas that included a close-up of the album artwork which featured a building lit up in all the colors of the rainbow.

“Deada** thought I made it very obvious,” he snarkily wrote at the time.
