As “Backstreet Boys: The Experience” opens, Nick Carter says of group's longevity, “We never really expected it”

Rebecca Sapp/WireImageIn a six-month period that saw the Backstreet Boys score a #1 album and receive a Grammy nomination, it’s safe to say that after 26 years together, the group and their music are still impacting fans.  And according to Nick Carter, that longevity is something they never saw coming.

“It’s satisfying and exciting, because you work so hard after so many years. We never really expected it,” Nick tells Billboard. “We don’t ever expect anything that’s been given to us or that happens to us. We’re just kind of living in the moment.”

Wednesday sees the opening of Backstreet Boys: The Experience, an interactive exhibit at L.A.’s Grammy Museum that will allow fans to get up close and personal with the group’s memorabilia, including their outfits from the “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” video, costumes from their Unbreakable and Black and Blue tours, childhood photos, school diplomas and more.

There are also more than 1,000 fan-sourced images from meet-and-greets and concerts over the years, many of which have been put up on a 50-foot wall in the exhibit.  The exhibit even features a special booth where fans can record a 30-second message for the Boys.

As for the secret to the group’s longevity, Nick says, ” We know each other inside and out, and that has created a bond and family dynamic. We stick together through thick and thin, love each other and trust each other.”

Backstreet will wrap up their Larger Than Life Las Vegas residency April 27, and then kick off their DNA World Tour May 11 in Portugal. The museum exhibit runs through September 2.
