Dua Lipa reveals advice she got from Katy Perry about dealing with online bullies

Carin BackoffIn a new cover story with Elle magazine, Dua Lipa opens up about the advice Katy Perry gave her about dealing with online trolls.

“When I met Katy Perry, she was like, ‘I hope you don’t search your name,’” Dua recalls. “She was like, ‘That’s what I did at the beginning of my career, and I’d get upset about every tabloid that said something about me.’”

“She said, ‘Do not have notifications on. Do not read that s**t, because it will stop you from doing what you love,’” Dua says.

Dua learned pretty quickly how toxic the Internet can be. When asked about how the American audience is different from Europeans, the British singer admits Americans have been way more scathing with their criticisms.

“They’re brutal,” she tells Elle. “The trolls stateside are the worst. When I was starting out, I never remember feeling hate. Then things got big, and I felt this weird expectation of being Beyonce already.”

In order to escape the scrutiny, Dua’s learned to take frequents breaks from social media.

“Twitter is super-toxic,” she says. “I find myself having to take time off to be able to be creative. Don’t get me wrong, I have amazing fans and I get really nice comments, but you always think about the one bad one.”
