Ruven AfanadorSam Smith broke up with his boyfriend of eight months, 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn, in June, but he says he’s still pondering what happened between them.
Speaking with the London Sunday Times Style magazine, Sam says, “Brandon was wonderful. I’m still trying to figure out what I took from that relationship and what it meant to me. It’s still quite raw. All my relationships have ended in a nice way, never nasty.”
While Sam won’t spill on why the two split, he says in general, he’s fine with the fact that their romance was splashed all over the papers. “Seeing gay relationships [in a public way] is important and refreshing. You don’t see it loads,” he explains.
And despite his heartbreak, Sam says he still loves the idea of being in love.
“I love sending flowers, leaving notes around the house and making thoughtful presents. I feel like I’m in a Richard Curtis film all the time,” he tells Sunday Times Style, referring to the writer/director of Love, Actually, Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary. “Which is bad, because I think everything should be like a movie and I get anxiety when it’s not.”
Unlike some celebrities, Sam admits he doesn’t use any dating apps, preferring to meet people “out and about” or “under disco balls.” But he claims he’s not currently on the lookout for a new boyfriend.
“Right now, the thought of getting into a relationship is too much,” says Sam. “I just want to marry my job, work really hard and hopefully, when I’m not looking for [love], it will come.”
