Mike Posner releases new live album of “spontaneous poetry jams”

Island RecordsMike Posner, the Grammy-nominated singer behind “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” is working on a new album, but in the meantime, you can check out his new live album, I was born in detroit on a very, very, very, very, very, very, very cold day.  Recorded while he was on tour with Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, the album features Mike reciting poetry on stage.

“It was this weird thing where we’d bust into these, like, spontaneous poetry jams for these kids,” Mike tells ABC Radio. “I’m sure they never heard anything like it before in their life.”

During the tour, Mike wrote a new poem to perform every night, and his backup band would make up music on the spot while he was talking. He was surprised at how well it went over with Nick and Demi’s young fans.

“No matter what we did, they seemed to cheer,” he says.

Mike says he’s heard from fans who tell him, “I…never heard you before and we were blown away,” as well as fans who say, “The poem changed how I was doing things in my life.”

Mike says he feels “more comfortable” reciting poems than he does singing, and believes his poems allow him to express his emotions better than his songs do.

“[When] you’re doing a piece you wrote for that night, that’s how you feel right then,” he explains. “Where as…y’know, I might be doing [my hit] ‘Cooler than Me’… I wrote that song in 2008 or 9, so it’s nine or 10 years ago. This is not exactly how I feel right now.”

But Mike’s not giving up writing and singing songs.  Asked to describe his new album, he says, “It’s just some darn good songs. Some darn good, American, singer-songwriter songs.”
