Camilizers everywhere rejoiced Friday when Camila Cabello released her long-awaited debut solo album, Camila. It includes her global smash “Havana,” but Latin music isn’t all you’ll find. The Cuban/Mexican singer says the album’s a true reflection of who she is.
“I just took every element from things that influenced me, like my culture, my heritage…Latin music that inspires me,” she tells ABC Radio. “I also love singer-songwriters, R&B, emo…I love dancing but I also love guitar. So all those different elements make the album what it is.”
And, unlike in Fifth Harmony, Camila took creative control of the project and co-wrote every song.
“I just let myself not have any rules,” she tells ABC Radio. “There are songs that are emotional…and then there’s also songs that are just fun. Y’know, they don’t have to be that deep. I just let myself be free and I didn’t overthink.”
“Never Be the Same” is Camila’s current single, but “Havana” is still huge, which Camila says surprised her.
“I definitely didn’t think it would be as big as it became,” she admits. “I mean, I always knew that the song was special, but you can’t really predict. You just never know.”
Now that the album’s out, Camila says she’s planning lots of live performances for 2018. And of course, if she ever needs career advice, she can always ask rock legend Elton John, who recently gushed about how much he loves her in a radio interview.
“I thought it was fake…But no, it was real, it’s crazy!” Camila laughs. “He’s probably scared of me now, though because I’ve tweeted about it so many times! I’m like, ‘Elton! I love you!’ He’s like, ‘Whoa, shouldn’t’ve said that. She’s crazy!'”
