Taylor Swift rocks a snake microphone on “Saturday Night Live”; “Reputation” sells 700K in one day

Will Heath/NBCTaylor Swift made her return to the spotlight this weekend with two musical performances on Saturday Night Live.  She didn’t say anything, but her stage accessory spoke volumes.

During her first number, “…Ready for It?,” Taylor used a microphone that had a glittery snake attached to it.  It was the continuation of the “snake” theme she’s been using to announce her new era.  As you’ll recall, she first teased her album Reputation with a series of snake videos, and has also posed for a photo wearing a snake-shaped ring.

The “snake” theme is Taylor’s attempt to reclaim the word after her socials were flooded with snake emojis last year following the Kim Kardashian Snapchat video scandal.

For “…Ready for It?,” Taylor and backup dancers did a choreographed routine while wearing black crop tops and shorts.  For her second number, “Call It What You Want,” Taylor wore a black sweater and long skirt and played an acoustic guitar while seated, accompanied by a cello player and another guitarist.

“Call It What You Want” appears to be a highly significant song for Taylor.  In the magazines that come with the Target edition of Reputation, lyrics from the track appear everywhere.

“All the liars are calling me one/nobody’s heard from me for months” appears on the inside front cover of one magazine, while “I’m doing better than I ever was” is on the inside back cover.

In addition, a series of Polaroid images are captioned with other lyrics from the song, including “All my flowers grew back as thorns” and “You don’t need to save me/but would you run away with me?”

Billboard reports that according to Nielsen Music, Reputation sold 700,000 copies its first day in stores.
