Kelly Clarkson explains why she's joining “The Voice” and not “American Idol”

Ruven Afanador for Entertainment WeeklyKelly Clarkson graces the cover of Entertainment Weekly‘s Fall Music Preview issue, and in the article, she explains why she’s decided to be a coach on The Voice instead of a judge on the show that made her a household name.

The announcement that Kelly was joining season 14 of the voice — which will debut in 2018 — came two days after ABC announced it was rebooting American Idol. According to Kelly, Idol‘s first winner, she’s doing The Voice because of her family. As most fans know, her husband Brandon Blackstock manages judge Blake Shelton, so she goes to The Voice set with her kids all the time, and is friendly with everyone who works there.

“I want it to be a great experience for my whole family,” she explains. “And that’s what I have to think about at this point in my life.”

EW reports that plans for Kelly to join The Voice have been in the works for nearly four years — she just had to put it off because of her two closely-spaced pregnancies.

Elsewhere in EW, Kelly talks about her soulful new album The Meaning of Life, due October 27, and says it’s the “most fun” she’s ever had recording an album. Kelly has previously butted heads over artistic control with some of the people at her previous record label, RCA. In the article, she says Dr. Luke, who co-produced “Since U Been Gone,” was demeaning to her and difficult to work with.

“There are many people in the world to befriend, and he is not one of them,” she says.

Dr. Luke is the producer who Kesha has accused of sexually and verbally abusing her. He has denied her accusations.
