Selena Gomez says “singing is not how I define myself”

John Shearer/Getty ImagesAmidst the glitz and glamour of the Met Gala, Selena Gomez revealed she’d be totally fine if her fame suddenly disappeared.

Selena, who walked the red carpet at Monday’s event with boyfriend The Weeknd, was photographed later that night by Humans of New York photographer Brandon Stanton. He got the singer to open up about what keeps her grounded.

“I feel like I’m just starting, but I think I’d be fine if it all went away,” she said. “I get that from my mother. From the moment I started singing, she always reminded me that all of this was a privilege, and could be taken at any moment.”

She continued, “So singing is not how I define myself. I try to keep my identity rooted in my friendships and my faith.”

The photo and quote from Selena was posted on the Humans of New York social media pages, as well as in a slideshow on Vogue.com. The spread also featured photos and interviews with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, and Serena Williams and fiancé Alexis Ohanian.
