Lorde released “Green Light” because she “felt like being a psycho”

Brendan WalterWhen Lorde released her new single “Green Light,” fans couldn’t help but notice that it sounded very different from her previous work — you could actually dance to it, for one thing.  Lorde says she wanted to put out an upbeat track because everything else on the radio is just too laid back for her tastes.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1, the New Zealand star explains, “A lot of the music on the radio is very chill these days, very slow. And I was like, ‘You know what? I don’t feel like being chill. I feel like being a psycho and just bursting back and being like, “Here it is! All of it! This is everything that I’ve been feeling!”‘”

The fact that she ended up creating songs that sound like “Green Light” actually came as a surprise to Lorde, who says her upcoming album Melodrama turned out differently than she originally thought it would.

“I mean, I think that you have an idea of what an album will be when you start, and to look back at that picture at the end, it’s always very, very different,” she told BBC Radio 1. “So I definitely didn’t know I was going to make this record influenced by all this music that I was dancing to every night, but I did.”

Now all she needs to do is get over her self-consciousness when it comes to playing her new music for her friends and family.

“It’s embarrassing,” she said during the interview.  “Because I think everything I do is terrible. I’m so self-deprecating…I mean, I love it, but it takes me a second to get there.”

Melodrama arrives in June. Lorde has a bunch of festivals on her schedule right now, but says a proper tour is definitely coming.
