Demi Lovato: New album “Tell Me You Love Me” is “a musical scrapbook of my life today”

Island/Safehouse/Hollywood RecordsDemi Lovato‘s last album, Confident, earned her a Grammy nomination.  Her new album, Tell Me You Love Me, is in stores today, and she says it represents the next step in her evolution as an artist.

“You’ll hear it in my voice and in my lyrics,” she tells ABC Radio. “I’m more honest and it’s the most authentic I’ve ever been to myself and to my sound.”

Demi’s sound this time around is more R&B than pop,  a genre of music she says feels more natural to her.  As for what inspired her new material, it’s basically everything she’s been going through over the past few years, including ending a long-time romance and living the single life.

“This chapter of my life represents where I’m at personally and so it’s like a giant scrapbook…a musical scrapbook of my life today,” she says. “It definitely represents a different era.”

Fans no doubt will have fun determining who Demi is singing about on her new songs.  She tells Noisey that two songs — “Ruin the Friendship” and “Only Forever” — are about the same person, and it’s not her ex, Wilmer Valderrama.  The songs are about wanting to get out of the friend zone with someone, who may be her buddy, Nick Jonas.  One line in “Ruin the Friendship” is “Put down your cigar and pick me up,” and Noisey notes that Nick is a huge fan of cigars.

While Demi’s last album featured several guest stars, Tell Me You Love Me has only one: Lil Wayne.  But that doesn’t mean Demi doesn’t want to sing with other artists: two she’d love to work with are Cardi B and fellow Texan Kelly Clarkson.

“I want it to happen so badly,” she says of duetting with Kelly. “So hopefully it’ll happen.”
