Bobby, Billie Jean & Bareilles: Sara writes new song for “Battle of the Sexes” soundtrack

Melinda Sue Gordon/ 2017 Twentieth Century Fox Film CorporationSara Bareilles is serving up some new music next week.

The singer will be releasing a new song called “If I Dare” as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming movie Battle of the Sexes. The film centers on the real-life 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King, played by Emma Stone, and former men’s champ Bobby Riggs, played by Steve Carell.

The match came about when Riggs, who was 55 and retired at the time, claimed that that female tennis players were inferior, and boasted that he could beat any top female champ.  King accepted his challenge and the two faced off in a televised match in the Houston Astrodome, which had a winner-take-all prize of $100,000.

“Billie Jean is one of the great leaders of our time,” Sara says in a statement. “Her courage, her conviction, and her willingness to take risks in order to make change are part of what makes her so powerful.”

She says that she wrote the song with composer Nicholas Britell about “one pivotal chapter” of Billie Jean’s story.

Sara adds, “Getting the opportunity to collaborate with Nick and his gorgeous score for the film only made the project that much sweeter. We hoped to echo Billie Jean’s tremendous resilience in the face of adversity with the song, and capture some of her fierce drive and spirit.”

“If I Dare” will be released September 15. Battles of the Sexes hits select theaters on September 22.
