ABC/Heidi GutmanOK, so maybe “Despacito” has just been knocked out of the #1 spot on the chart by Taylor Swift. The Luis Fonsi/Daddy Yankee/Justin Bieber collabo has still managed to score the title of Song of the Summer, declares Billboard.
It was no contest, really: Billboard’s annual Songs of the Summer chart runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and “Despacito” was number one on that chart for every single one of those 14 weeks.
That kind of chart run isn’t very rare, either: over the past 10 years, three other tunes have swept the Songs of the Summer chart the way “Despacito” has: Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy,” Drake‘s “One Dance,” and Katy Perry‘s “California Gurls.”
“Despacito” is the first mostly Spanish-language Song of the Summer since Los Del Rio’s “Macarena,” which was the Song of the Summer in 1996.
As for the rest of this year’s Songs of the Summer chart, Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like” was the #2 song of the summer, followed by #3 and #4, both by DJ Khaled: “I’m the One” and “Wild Thoughts,” respectively. Rounding out the top five is Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.”
