For “Green Light” video, Lorde wanted to look like “any of the young people who listen to my music”

Brenda WalterWhen Lorde returned to the spotlight with her new single “Green Light,” she knew the song’s video would be the first time fans had seen her in about three years.  That’s why she says that while making it, she wanted to look like one of them.

In a behind-the-scenes interview for Vevo, Lorde explains that in her previous videos, “I always had dark lipstick on and I was in a weird kind of outfit.”  She adds, “This time, I was like, ‘I wanna look the way my friends see me. I wanna feel like I could be any one of the young people who listen to my music.'”

Not only that, but Lorde wanted the video to reflect reality; specifically, one of her typical evenings out on the town.

“I knew that I wanted it to be set at night, and to feel like my real life,” she explains. “I’m wearing the shoes that I wear every night when I go out partying at home. I call a car and I get in a car…all these things are taken from my real life.”

One thing she doesn’t do in real life, though, is dance on the roof of SUVs in the middle of the night.  Still, that’s one of the key scenes in the clip.

“It was actually quite difficult to dance on the roof of a Suburban at three in the morning,” she laughs. “It was a really cold night, and it kept getting covered in dew, so they would come and towel it down.”

“It was definitely a moment up there where I was like, ‘Cars are generally not built to have a girl dancing around, losing her mind on top of them!'” she adds. “It was one of the strangest things I think I’ve done.”
