Rita Ora appeared in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies, and also released a hit song, “For You,” from the soundtrack of the franchise’s final installment, Fifty Shades Freed. Now she’s hoping to repeat that with the hit film Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
Rita co-stars in Pokémon Detective Pikachu as scientist Dr. Ann Laurent, and she’s also recorded a song for the movie: a collaboration with Kygo called “Carry On.” Rita tells ABC Radio she had the song before she made the movie, but then figured it would fit in nicely.
“I realized every film needs an amazing song, and I kinda did the same thing when I did Fifty Shades of Grey: I just kinda sent the song over and I was like, ‘This would be really cool for the film,’ ’cause the lyrics really made sense,” she explains.
“And then Kygo just killed it and [the studio] just loved it and everyone was on board,” she adds.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu is much lighter than Rita’s previous films, but she says appearing in the live-action/animated project — which stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the adorable yellow Pokémon character, Pikachu — was a childhood dream come true.
“I love Pokémon, I love Pikachu. I’ve always loved it since I was a kid,” Rita tells ABC Radio. “I never really could afford the computer stuff, so I only got the cards but I remember just being in school and collecting the cards, and people in my school used to sell cards to each other.”
“I just remember the journey behind being proud of like collecting things,” Rita adds. “So that just really sold me, and obviously Ryan is fantastic. It was a no-brainer for me.”
