Unlike many of today’s young female pop stars, Alessia Cara isn’t the subject of countless stories about whom she’s dated, who she’s currently dating, or who she may be dating in the future. And she says that’s just the way she likes it.
It may sound like Alessia’s latest hit, “Out of Love,” is about her own relationship, but it’s actually about a friend’s. And while her own love life did inspire some of the other songs on her sophomore album, The Pains of Growing — and which Alessia says she’s been transparent about — she doesn’t really think that’s what fans are most interested in.
“With relationships, people always try to play detective and figure out who it is, or when she made this or who she’s talking about, so that can be a little weird,” Alessia tells ABC Radio. “But I think I’ve established, hopefully and thankfully, a good position as an artist where people just care about my music and it’s not so much about the outside stuff of who I’m dating.”
In other words, Alessia believes her fans aren’t as obsessed about who she’s dating in the same way they are with other pop stars.
“I’m not really involved in the celebrity gossip stuff,” she notes. “So people just kinda listen to my music to listen to it, and to see something in themselves which I’m very thankful for — ’cause I don’t know if I’d do well on the other side!”
Alessia is currently on tour with Shawn Mendes. Next month, she’ll kick off her own headlining tour of Canada.
