Why Ariana Grande's “thank u, next” album has already made history

Republic RecordsAriana Grande‘s upcoming album thank u, next isn’t coming out until February 8, but it’s already made history — and not just because it’s coming out so soon after her last album, Sweetener.

As Billboard notes, the album is only the third in history to have spun off two songs that debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The other two albums?  Drake’s 2018 release Scorpion and Mariah Carey‘s 1995 album Daydream.

Mariah’s two #1 debuts were “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day,” her collabo with Boyz II Men.  That last song spent 16 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record that wasn’t matched until “Despacito” came along in 2017.

As for Drake, his two #1 debuts were “God’s Plan” and “Nice For What.”  Ariana’s are her latest, “7 Rings,” and “thank u, next,” which debuted on top in November and racked up seven weeks at #1.

As previously reported, Ariana is only the fifth artist in history to have more than one song debut at #1.  The others are, obviously Mariah and Drake, but also Justin Bieber and Britney Spears

Mariah is currently the queen of this particular milestone: She’s got three #1 career debuts.  However, Ariana may end up tying or surpassing her with her current project.
