ABC/Jeff NeiraNew Year’s Eve is always a big celebration, but it’s even more of a party if you happen to have been born on December 31. The Chainsmokers‘ Drew Taggart is a New Year’s Eve baby, and he jokes that that’s why he has no memories of watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve growing up.
“New Year’s Eve is actually my birthday, so yeah, I definitely wasn’t watching TV,” jokes Drew. “But I hear it’s a pretty big show!”
Tonight, Drew and band mate Alex Pall are one of the acts on that “pretty big show.” They’re part of the Hollywood Party segment of New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, along with Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Halsey, Charlie Puth and more.
“Honestly, it’s amazing,” Drew says, getting serious. “I mean, we watch the ball drop…and we’ve seen so many big artists over the years that’ve been a part of the show — and now we’re here!. It feels a little bit surreal, to be honest.”
Also on the bill: Kelsea Ballerini, who sings on The Chainsmokers’ hit “This Feeling,” and who’ll perform with the guys tonight.
Kelsea says growing up in Tennessee, “I just remember every year watching the New York performances and thinking, like, ‘This looks aggressively cold.’ But the heart of it is so celebratory that wherever you’re watching it from — whether it’s a party at your house or whatever — you feel that, it comes through. And it’s always been a part of me ringing in the New Year.”
Kelsea also has a special New Year’s resolution.
“I think my biggest goal, personally, is to be a little less…addicted to my phone,” she tells ABC Radio. “I’m a millennial — I’m 25 — so I am right in that phase. I think that’s a personal goal of mine.”
