Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images for GlamourAfter a surprise guest performance on SNL Saturday, Halsey recited a powerful original poem at Glamour’s 2018 Women of the Year Summit Sunday.
The poem, called “Inconvenient Woman,” breaks down the challenges women face — in the workplace, in marriage, in politics and even in their own skin.
The poem begins, “Brutally honest, outspoken and fearless/Goes with their gut, never favors appearance/’Cause who has time for vanity with opponents to extinguish?/And don’t you think that hint of silver hairline is…distinguished?/In men? All these qualities, they make you a genius/But if you’re a woman, you’re an inconvenience.”
Halsey ends with the message, “I’m here to say that I’m not sorry/For being…inconvenient/You were not put on this earth to make everybody else’s life easier/So please, be inconvenient.”
The appearance capped off the singer’s busy weekend, which included an SNL performance of the track “Can’t Be Broken” with musical guest Lil Wayne. She thanked Lil Wayne on Twitter for “making this lil girl’s dreams come true” and showed off a brand-new tattoo that the rapper drew out for her just seconds before she appeared on stage.
The new ink features the words “sins” and “forgiveness” surrounding a scale, inspired by the Lil Wayne lyric from “She Will”: “On my Libra scale I’m weighing sins and forgiveness.”
Halsey pointed out that both she and Wayne are Libras.
