Ariana Grande said her new single “God Is a Woman” would be about, “how women are literally everything & the universe is inside of us” — and the video for the song certainly follows that theme.
Ariana does it all in the Dave Meyers-directed clip. She dances in the middle of the Milky Way, bathes naked in pastel-colored paint and she literally sits on top of the world.
In one scene, set to a monologue voiced by Madonna, Ariana hurls a hammer to smash the glass ceiling. This explains why Ariana tweeted a cryptic message to Madonna earlier this week. “Thank you Madonna,” she wrote. “You know why.”
The music video ends with Ariana in a live, all-female recreation of Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.”
Ariana released the track at midnight, following her previous single “No Tears Left to Cry.” Her album Sweetener comes out August 17.
