Which female celebrity does Maroon 5 regret not being able to get for their new video?

222/Interscope RecordsMaroon 5’s eye-catching new video for “Girls Like You” features many accomplished and notable women, from Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and comedian Tiffany Haddish, to Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim and gymnast Aly Raisman.  But the clip’s director says he regrets that there was one famous famous “Dame” he was unable to land for a cameo.

“The one regret I had was Helen Mirren,” says David Dobkin, who also directed the movie Wedding Crashers, and Maroon 5’s clip for “Sugar.”  He tells Entertainment Weekly, “She was going to be in it, and we could not work out the schedule.”

As it was, Dobkin says, it took nearly five months to make the video — they kept extending the schedule so more people would be available.  Ellen DeGeneres was the first one they asked, and then, he says, “We wrote personal letters to each and every one…this is a list of people that we were inspired by, who said yes, and actually were able to make it.”

According to Dobkin, some of the women came without getting the okay from their teams, including rapper Cardi B, who’s featured on the song.  “Cardi flew out and shot the video without anybody approving,” he reveals. “She was awesome.”

But Dobkin admits he and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine got a little carried away and kept trying to persuade more and more women to participate.

“At one point I looked at Adam and was like, ‘We have to stop.’ … Seriously, we were like, ‘Let’s go to London and we’re gonna get Adele, and we were trying to get a hold of Michelle Obama, and I was like, ‘You know I extended the final chorus to get everyone in!'”
