Bazzi explains why “Mine” is now yours

BryantBazzi finished up his gig as the opening act for Camila Cabello’s Never Be the Same tour Friday night in New York City, but July 8 in Seattle, he’ll kick off his own headlining tour, dubbed the Cosmic tour.  Bazzi is, of course, getting these opportunities thanks to his hit “Mine,” which he says has gone from an extremely personal about his girl, to a song for everyone.

“Yeah, ‘Mine,’ was inspired by a person, but it became much deeper than that,” Bazzi tells ABC Radio. “I obviously pulled lyrics…from stuff I was actually saying to this person and feeling about this person, but it was for people.”

He explains, “I didn’t want to make that song to impress that girl, I wanted to make that song to make people feel better.”

Well, it worked: He says he’s seen fans incorporate “Mine” into prom-posals and other romantic gestures.

“I’ve seen so many people ask, like, homecoming dates and stuff…like, ‘Will you be “Mine?”‘…all that stuff, I’ve seen that just about everywhere,” says Bazzi. “That’s probably the craziest part about all this, is that it’s so personal at the beginning and then you put it out, and it’s not yours anymore.”

But the Michigan-born singer did have an inkling that the song would go places.

“I knew for a fact it was special, but at the same time, every single song I make, I know it’s special,” he explains. “So ‘Mine’ was a completely similar feeling as I feel about all my other music.”

“I’m making music that I love a lot, so to me they’re all the same, I love them all equally as much,” he adds. “It’s like children. You don’t pick a favorite even if one goes to Harvard.”

Bazzi’s album Cosmic is available now.
