Bret Hartman/Blue Sky StudiosNick Jonas has been nominated for a slew of high-profile awards, but Sunday he’ll compete for a new one: a Golden Globe. He’s nominated for his songwriting, not his acting, but he’s facing some stiff competition.
Nick’s nominated for Best Original Song for “Home,” which he co-wrote for the animated film Ferdinand, based on the classic children’s book about a bull who’d rather smell flowers than compete in the bullring.
“I would describe ‘Home’ as a song that is about being totally comfortable with who you are,” Nick explains. “And being in a spot in your life where, whatever that thing is that drives you, that makes you who you are – whether it’s family, your hometown, music you love – whatever it is, that’s your home and you have to stay true to that.”
The movie has a similar theme, says Nick.
“Ferdinand is a perfect example of someone who is totally authentic to himself…he loves what he loves and he is who he is,” says Nick. “And that story of acceptance…is so important, and one that I think the world needs to hear.”
For Nick, watching the movie was “very emotional.”
“You have two dreams, I think, as a songwriter…hear your song on the radio and see your song in a movie,” he says. “And this is checking one of those off my list.”
Unfortunately, Nick’s competition includes Mariah Carey, for “The Star,” from the movie of the same name, and Mary J. Blige, for her song from the movie Mudbound, as well as the Oscar-winning duo who wrote Frozen‘s “Let It Go” and the Oscar-winning team who wrote La La Land’s “City of Stars.”
Tune in to the Globes Sunday night on NBC to see if Nick comes out on top.
