ABC/Heidi GutmanNick Jonas’ last album, Last Year Was Complicated, was a breakup album, but the singer says his new music is much more upbeat…and has some unexpected musical influences.
Speaking to Billboard, Nick says, “I can tell you that this body of work as a whole has a real sense of optimism about it, in the lyrics…this one feels lighter and I think touches on an excitement I feel about this next chapter of my life and the journey that I’m going on.”
“I listen to music to be uplifted and to enjoy my time so I want to create that for my fans as well,” he adds.
Nick says the artists he admires most, “write songs that really become part of the fabric of your life and help tell your own stories because they’re so relatable and so universal,” so that’s what he’s trying to do. Perhaps that’s why he tells Billboard that his new music was inspired by, “people like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, more modern stuff like The Weeknd.”
As far as collaborators go, Nick says he’s written songs with Simon Wilcox, with whom he co-wrote “Jealous,” as well as Eminem collaborator Skylar Grey as well as Justin Tranter. Nick and Justin co-wrote “Home,” the song that’s earned them a Golden Globe nod.
No word on when we can expect the new music.
