If two of the world’s biggest stars team up to record a duet, it’d be sort of weird if it didn’t hit #1, right?
Ed Sheeran‘s single “Perfect,” which is now a duet featuring Beyonce, sits at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it’s selling so fast that it could reach #1 next week. If that happens, it would dethrone Post Malone‘s “Rockstar,” which has spent eight weeks on top.
If “Perfect” does hit #1, it’d be the second song this year to do so following the addition of a high-profile guest artist. The first one was, of course, “Despacito,” which peaked at #44 in April in its original version by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. Four weeks after Justin Bieber jumped on the remix, it topped the chart, and spent 16 weeks at #1.
This scenario is obviously what Ed had in mind when he described his plan to add Beyonce to the track. “I’m just basically gonna ‘Despacito’ ‘Perfect,'” he previously said.
If “Perfect” does hit #1, it’ll be Ed’s second Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper following “Shape of You.” It’ll be Beyonce’s sixth as a solo artist, and her first since “Single Ladies” in 2008.
And, according to Billboard, if “Perfect” hits #1, it’ll be the first #1 of the decade credited equally to a solo male and female artist. The last time that happened was in 2009, with Alicia Keys and JAY-Z‘s “Empire State of Mind.”
