But the night belonged to Eminmen, who opened the show with an orchestral-backed debut performance of his new single, “Walk on Water,” with Skylar Grey substituting for Beyonce on the hook. Eminem also won the Best Hip Hop award, despite, as he noted, not having had an album out for a while.
Camila Cabello, who won the Best Pop award, was on hand to deliver a multi-part, highly choreographed performance of “Havana.” Demi Lovato offered a medley of “Sorry Not Sorry and “Tell Me You Love Me,” and Kesha performed a moving rendition of “Learn to Let Go”
Liam Payne also was among the show’s performers, offering a version of “Strip That Down.”
Rita Ora hosted and performed two songs — “Your Song” and “Anywhere” — and accepted the first ever MTV EMA Power of Music Award on behalf of all the artist who contributed to the charitable efforts to aid the victims of the Grenfell tower fire in London.
David Guetta closed the show, joined by Charli XCX and French Montana, for a version of “Dirty Sexy Money.”
The EMAs, also recognized local acts in various regions. Fifth Harmony was the Local Act winner for the U.S.
