Jordan Lewis, who teaches American government and economics at Ridgway High School, has been named Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for November 2022. He was formally recognized during a classroom visit at Ridgway High School in Santa Rosa Friday morning.

The award gives community members the opportunity to recognize teachers from throughout Sonoma County who go above and beyond for their students. The Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) partners with Community First Credit Union, Hot 101.7, and Froggy 92.9 to deliver this program.

“Over the past several years of disruptions to learning and adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, one constant in our education has been the innovative spirit and passion of our teachers,” said Steven D. Herrington, Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools. “The Teacher of the Month program honors and thanks those educators who have given so much to support our students as we seek to accelerate learning.”

More than 30 people wrote testimonials in support of Mr. Lewis during the most recent nomination period for the Teacher of the Month award. Their comments described Mr. Lewis as a kind and enthusiastic teacher who takes the time to foster deep relationships with his students.

“… He makes everyone feel important. He understands that we aren’t just high school students but we’re people who have feelings. He hears us all out, communicates, and understands we all learn things in a different way. This teacher has been nothing but kind and understanding to everyone around him,” one nomination read.

“He’s a great teacher, always on the lookout to see who needs help. (He’s) very easy to talk to and relatable to his students, always has a positive attitude, and I believe those are all the attributes a teacher needs to inspire a kid like me to look for more after high school than just a minimum wage job,” another community member wrote in their submission.

Mr. Lewis was awarded a plaque and a $500 classroom supply gift card during Friday’s classroom visit, which was attended by Ridgway Principal Sydney Smith, Santa Rosa City Schools Superintendent Anna Trunnell, SCOE staff and representatives from Hot 101.7 and Froggy 92.9., among others.

“When I’ve been in and out of his classroom, I’ve just been so impressed,” Principal Smith said during the classroom visit. “He’s always scaffolding for you guys … all of his lessons are helping you guys learn and find answers.”
