There are few things better to do as an artist than attending a major music event as a fan, promising yourself you won’t come back until you’re part of the lineup, and then fulfilling that promise. That’s what exactly what Bazzi‘s will do Saturday when he makes his performance debut at Coachella.
“Coachella’s the pinnacle, it really is. Coachella’s the festival that kind of gave festivals that aesthetic,” Bazzi tells ABC Radio. “I’ve always dreamed about it, even before I went. I thought it was such a magical place. And then I went and it was exactly what I thought it was.”
Which is why Bazzi vowed he wouldn’t return until he was on the stage.
“I knew how bad I wanted to perform when I went, and I said I wasn’t gonna go again until I was performing,” he says. “So to be back there feels incredible and it’s such a cool affirmation for me….really exciting.”
The “Beautiful” singer says he’s ready to give fans a great show, too, because he’s really upped his live performance game over the past year, thanks to being on the road with the likes of Camila Cabello and Justin Timberlake.
Bazzi says figuring out what kind of performer he wanted to be is “something you can only learn through experience,” and notes, “Getting to tour for the last six months was incredible, I learned so much about myself as a performer.”
Coachella is the first of several festivals Bazzi’s playing this summer as he works on new material, and the two new tracks he recently released — “Paradise” and “Caught In the Fire” — will definitely be on his set list Saturday.
“Hopefully, by the time I get around to Governors Ball,” he says, “there’ll be other new music to play, too.”
