No more Mr. Nice Guy: Shawn Mendes says he’s ready to shed that image

ABC/Image Group LAShawn Mendes might be ready to shed his “nice guy” image.

The singer tells U.K.’s The Guardian that he’s tired of being put into a “wholesome” box.

“Yeah, I am! It sounds so stupid – to be a nice person is the best thing in the world – but, yeah, I’m 20 and I just want to have fun,” he says. “What I don’t want to do is live the rest of my life thinking, ‘I wouldn’t do that because I’m known as Prince Charming.’”

Shawn adds, “The second that someone corners you into a personality, you don’t want to be that person anymore.”

Another thing he’s sick of? Getting questioned about his sexuality. Shawn, who identifies as straight, says the rumors to contrary are “hurtful.”

“I get mad when people assume things about me, because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have, and how that must affect them,” he says.

Shawn is currently on tour in the U.K. On May 4, he’ll be the musical guest on SNL.
