Sean ErikssonAvicii may be gone…but his music lives on.
Before the superstar deejay and producer passed away on April 20, 2018, he was nearly done with a new album. He left behind almost-completed songs, notes, emails and texts about his music, allowing his collaborators to carry out his vision.
The result of their efforts is an album called TIM — Avicii’s birth name was Tim Bergling — which will be released June 6. A single called “SOS” will drop April 10.
According to the New York Times, “SOS” features Avicii reuniting with Aloe Blacc, who sang on his global smash hit “Wake Me Up.” The song features Aloe singing lyrics that Tim wrote: “Can you hear me, S.O.S./help me put my mind to rest.”
Chris Martin of Coldplay, who’d also worked with Tim in the past, contributes vocals to a song on the album.
Meanwhile, the deejay’s father tells the New York Times that he doesn’t know why his son decided to take his own life. “There is no letter,” he said. “Nothing points in the direction that he was planning it.” He adds that the family is still “very traumatized,” and notes, “We want peace.”
Producer Carl Falk, who worked on the new album, tells the Times that when he listens to the lyrics that the late star wrote, “I hear a lonely person with a lot of big emotions that he didn’t have enough people to talk to about.”
He adds, “I feel this music was his way of getting some of that out. That makes this a really important record. Whatever Tim wanted to say is here.”
All proceeds from the album will go to the newly established Tim Bergling Foundation, which works to raise awareness for mental illness and suicide prevention.
