Republic RecordsIt was no April Fools’ joke. As promised, Ariana Grande and her pal Victoria Monet released their new collab, “Monopoly,” on Monday.
Not only did they drop the new tune, they shared a music video for it as well. In the clip, inspired by viral Instagram star Donte Colley, Ariana and Victoria dance and act silly for the camera together on a rooftop.
“I like women and men/Work so f****** much need a twinny, twin twin/You’d be straight for life if I gave you my PIN/Even though we gave up that 90 percent,” Ariana sings.
That last line refers to the fact that Ariana gave up 90 percent of her songwriting royalties on her #1 hit “7 Rings” to legendary songwriting duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, because she borrowed the melody of their their composition “My Favorite Things,” from The Sound of Music.
The “I like women and men” line prompted fans to speculate if Ariana was coming out as bisexual. No word on that, but Victoria is openly bi.
Ariana and Victoria initially teased the song last week and told fans they’d be releasing it Monday in celebration of “7 Rings” spending eight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
While some fans thought it might be an April Fools’ prank, Ariana reassured them, tweeting, “why the whole f*** would this be an april fools joke there’s so much to celebrate and to say thank u for ! seriously ! we mean it. you’re getting a song today. period. love u.”
Victoria co-wrote “thank u, next” and “7 Rings” with Ariana, among other songs.
