Ava Max just released a new single called “So Am I,” but her breakout single, “Sweet but Psycho,” is still climbing the charts. The rising star tells ABC Radio that she constantly gets messages from fans telling her how much they feel “Psycho” applies to their own lives.
“Everybody messages every day,” Ava laughs. “They’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, my husband just called me psycho, this is so relatable!’ [or] ‘My girlfriend says I’m psycho for doing this or that.’ So the relatability on the song is just out of this world!”
According to Ava, a big part of “Sweet but Psycho’s” appeal is the fact that it’s reclaiming the word “psycho” so it’s no longer an insult.
“People, women in particular, get called ‘psycho’ when they’re passionate and opinionated, and that’s sad, you know?” Ava explains. “They shouldn’t be called ‘psycho.’ But in this case, ‘psycho'” is redefined.”
As for her new single, “So Am I,” Ava launched it by asking fans to participate in the #SoAmI challenge by sending her photos of themselves with “#SoAmI” written on their palms, along with a description of what makes them different. She then posted those pictures on her socials.
“For me, the song is just all about embracing yourself and loving yourself and where you come from, and who you are as a person,” Ava says.
Noting that social media is “super-unhealthy,” because it makes you constantly compare yourself to others, Ava explains that “it felt right right” to use it to get the song’s message out.
Ava also promises that she’ll release an entire album this summer, followed by a headlining tour.
