Brian ZiffShawn Mendes is up for a leading six trophies at this Sunday night’s Juno Awards — the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys — and he could make some history with a win.
As Billboard notes, Shawn’s hit “In My Blood” is up for Single of the Year, a category he won last year for his song “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” If he wins again this year, he’ll be the first artist to win back-to-back Single of the Year Junos since Alanis Morissette, who did it in 1996 and 1997. Shawn wasn’t even born then.
Shawn is also up for Songwriter of the Year for co-writing “In My Blood” and two other tracks from his current self-titled album: “Youth” and “Lost In Japan.” He was up for Song of the Year at last month’s Grammys, too. That makes him the first artist to be nominated for that Juno category and that Grammy category since Avril Lavigne did 15 years ago.
Shawn’s other Juno nominations are Fan Choice Award, which he’s won the last two years, as well as Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and Album of the Year.
Other Canadian nominees this year include Alessia Cara, Loud Luxury, Michael Buble, Avril Lavigne and The Weeknd. In the International Album of the Year category, the nominees are Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Maroon 5, Post Malone and Travis Scott.
