The night of the Oscars, rather than attending the annual A-list bash thrown by Vanity Fair magazine, John Mayer threw a fake version at his house, with guests like Dave Chappelle, Bob Saget and singer Halsey. As a joke, he incorporated Vanity Fair-brand paper plates and napkins into his celebration — and the brand certainly took notice.
During the episode of his online show Current Mood which featured the party, John came up with the idea for a commercial for Vanity Fair napkins. The brand responded by creating the commercial, word-for-word, featuring animation, and posting it on its Instagram feed.
“Brilliant idea courtesy of #NapkinInfluencer and Creative Director, @johnmayer,” the brand captioned the ad.
In the brief ad, a man and a woman meet at a party. “Hey, can I get your number?” he asks her. “Yeah,” she responds, whipping out a pen and preparing to scribble it on a napkin.”
“No, no, no, no,” the guy says. “Don’t write it on that napkin. That’s a Vanity Fair napkin.”
“How else am I supposed to give you the number?” the annoyed woman responds.
“If you’re gonna deface Vanity Fair napkins, I don’t think I want it anymore,” he replies.
Cut to a screen that says, “They never see each other again.”
John reposted the ad, and wrote, “Last week on @currentmood I pitched an idea for a commercial for Vanity Fair napkins. Well here it is, produced courtesy of – you guessed it – @vanityfairnapkins. This is one of the funniest and coolest things I’ve seen in a while. Well done.”
