Warner Bros. PicturesLady Gaga won the Best Original Song Oscar for co-writing “Shallow,” and now she’s won the Billboard album chart, as the soundtrack for A Star Is Born returns to #1.
According to Nielsen Music, as reported by Billboard, the album sold 128,000 units, representing a 152% sales increase. It knocks Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next album, which had been #1 for two weeks, down to number two.
But it wasn’t just the Oscars that led to A Star Is Born returning to #1. As Billboard notes, Amazon dropped the price to $3.99 on February 27, and then on February 28, the price of the album fell to just $2.99.
It’s worth noting that $3.49 is the minimum price for an album to chart, but only during its first four weeks of release. That’s to keep artists from deeply discounting their albums in their debut weeks to pump up sales. But since A Star Is Born‘s soundtrack has been out since October, the $2.99 price is allowed.
This is the soundtrack’s fourth week overall at #1 since its release, the most for any soundtrack since Frozen was #1 for 13 weeks. It’s also the most weeks at #1 for a live-action film soundtrack since the Disney Channel movie High School Musical 2 had four weeks at #1 in 2007.
The last theatrically-released movie soundtrack to score four weeks on top was 2003’s Bad Boys II.
Meanwhile, “Shallow” also has a good chance of knocking Ariana Grande‘s hit “7 Rings” out of the #1 spot over on the Billboard Hot 100.
