On Friday, Hozier will be releasing his new album Wasteland, Baby!, the follow-up to his self-titled debut, which featured his biggest hit, “Take Me to Church.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the singer discusses whether or not he felt any pressure to recreate to success of that song.
When asked if he was scared of becoming a one-hit wonder, Hozier says, “I hold that s*** at a distance, in the same way that I hold the success of ‘Take Me to Church’ at a distance from myself.”
He adds, “I don’t think that’s the best song I’ve written. And I don’t think it’s the best song I’m going to write. I also don’t think the charts are a strong reflection [of] what work is worthwhile.”
The only pressure he felt, he says, was “self-contained.” He wanted to make sure he was “writing the music that moved me and I felt I needed to write.”
Wasteland, Baby! features the previously released single “Movement,” as well as two cuts from his 2018 Nina Cried Power EP: the title track, and “Shrike.”
Hozier kicks off his U.S. tour March 10 in Buffalo, NY.
