Miley Cyrus talks “redefining” marriage with Liam, says new album is “genre-less”

John Shearer/Getty Images via ABCIn a revealing new cover story with Vanity Fair, Miley Cyrus reflects on losing her Malibu home to the Woolsey fire last year and how it brought her and Liam Hemsworth closer together.

Miley, who says she was in South Africa filming an episode of Black Mirror when the fire occurred, says she was both “super-angry” and “relieved in a way” when she learned the news.

“I’ll never be happy that all those memories and pictures and things that I’ve loved are gone,” she says. “But to have an experience like this — I find myself feeling more connected to being human again.”

It also bonded her even more with Liam, whom she married about a month later.

“When you experience what we experienced together with someone, it is like glue,” she says. “You’re the only two people in the world who can understand.”

Miley, who identifies as pansexual, further explains her reasoning for entering into what many would consider a “traditional” marriage.

“The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned — I actually think it’s kind of New Age,” she says. “We’re redefining, to be f****** frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship.”

She adds, “Relationships and partnerships in a new generation — I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender.”

Next up for Miley is her new album, due out this summer.

“There’s psychedelic elements, there’s pop elements, there’s more hip-hop-leaning records,” she says. “You know, in the same way I like to kind of just be genderless, I like feeling genre-less.”
