Francis Specker/CBSLady Gaga is defending Cardi B after the rapper received backlash over her historic Grammy win over the weekend.
The singer took to Twitter Tuesday night, calling Cardi “brave” and urging everyone to celebrate her victory.
“It is so hard to be a woman in this industry,” Gaga wrote. “What it takes, how hard we work through the disrespectful challenges, just to make art.”
She continued, “I love you Cardi. You deserve your awards. Let’s celebrate her fight. Lift her up & honor her. She is brave.”
Cardi has previously spoken about how Gaga influenced her when she was younger. In 2016, she tweeted, “When I was a teenager lady Gaga changed my life. She inspired me to be myself & be different.”
Over the weekend, Cardi became the first female solo artist to win the Best Rap Album category and almost immediately received criticism for it online. She deactivated her Instagram account Monday, shortly after posting an expletive-filled video hitting back against haters who said she didn’t deserve to win.
