Canada's Loud Luxury is glad the US is “catching up” to them — now, if we'd only spell their name right

Courtesy Loud LuxuryThis week, Canadian DJ duo Loud Luxury scored four nominations for the Junos — the Canadian Grammys — including Single of the Year for “Body.”  While “Body” is their breakthrough U.S. hit, it’s already been a huge hit in Canada: It came out back in 2017. But the duo realizes that when it comes to music, sometimes it takes time for everyone to get on board.

“We’ve seen the journey of millions of artists before us where…if they have a song that’s…bigger than them, it takes time for people to catch up and know who we are,” the duo’s Andrew Fedyk tells ABC Radio. “And that’s why we tour so much.”

His partner Joe Depace, agrees.

“We’re Canadians first and foremost,” he tells ABC Radio. “I mean, Canada really championed for us…[‘Body’] was #1 on the charts [there].”

One reason the track is now making inroads in the U.S. is its unique sound.

“It’s sort of an anomaly,” notes Joe.

“Yeah, and even when we first made it…we were like, ‘I don’t know where this fits,'” Andrew agrees. “It’s a bit hip-hop, it’s a bit R&B, it’s got a little country twang to it. So we were like, ‘I’m cool to see where this goes.'”

So far, where it’s gone is into the top 30 on Billboard‘s Pop Songs chart and top 10 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.  Now, if only Americans could get the duo’s name right.

“The thing I’m shocked about a lot is that everywhere we go in the States, people always spell ‘Luxury’ wrong,” complains Andrew. “Like, people’ll do it ‘L-U-X-O-R-Y,’ ‘E-R-Y’…. I was just a bit baffled by that.”

Adds Joe, “It’s L-U-X-U-R-Y, for those listening!”
