Halsey says there's no competition among peers like Ariana Grande and Lorde: “We're so supportive”

Eric Ray DavidsonDouble standards between men and women in the music industry? Halsey‘s not having it. The singer tells Glamour she would rather support her peers than play into the competitive narrative often forced upon female artists.

“I will say one thing about my generation of artists: We are just not f****** having it,” she tells the mag. “Lorde, Ariana [Grande]…if you open any of our text messages at any given time, all of us are just like, ‘Yo, I love your new record. When are you leaving for tour?’ We’re so supportive.”

That’s even been the case on social media. Earlier this month, Halsey’s “Without Me” replaced Ariana’s “thank u, next” at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Ariana congratulated her on Instagram.

Halsey responded, writing, “Luv u bb. Dynamic women who are headstrong + compassionate all 2019.”

Halsey points out to Glamour that unlike female artists, male artists aren’t typically pitted against each other, even if they have similar appeal.

“We live in a world where women are required to be so f******original, it’s crazy,” she says.

“There are so many male artists who are regurgitations of each other: They all f****** dress the same, they all have the same stylist, they all wear the same f****** clothes, they write with the same writers.”

As for what new music she’s been working on these days, Halsey says, “I’ve written a lot of inward music so far — it‘s been a reflection of me, my mental health, my experience…I think moving forward into this [next] record, it will be more outwardly existential, as opposed to introspective.”
