Halsey on how she handled G-Eazy split: “Make art, not headlines”

Eric Ray DavidsonIn a new interview with Glamour, Halsey opens up about what she learned from her very public breakup with rapper G-Eazy.

“The biggest lesson I learned was to make art, not headlines,” she says. “Because it can become quite easy, in the social media generation, to go from being a musician to becoming a personality.”

Instead of commenting publicly, Halsey turned the heartbreak into a hit song: “Without Me.” Halsey tells Glamour the song is about caring so deeply for someone that you lose yourself along the way.

“I call myself a collector; I collect things from people and use them to widen my artistic repertoire, so that I am writing from a culmination of experiences from the world,” she says. “But I’m an imitator as well, because I’m so passionately putting myself in other people’s shoes all the time.”

She says she’s learned to deal with her chameleon-like qualities by “surrounding myself with people I admire and really like.”

“Without Me” has become Halsey’s biggest solo track to date, hitting number on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Billboard’s Pop Songs chart. She’ll also be hosting and performing on SNL on February 9.
