Dennis LeupoldEven people who aren’t Backstreet Boys fans agree that some of the group’s hits — like “I Want It That Way” and “As Long As You Love Me” — are pop perfection. But the Boys themselves collectively agree that they’ve cut some bad songs along the way…and one in particular stands out for its sheer awfulness.
In a video called #DNAuary: Backstreet Confessions, the five members of the Backstreet Boys share their initial impressions of each other, pranks they’ve pulled on each other and other fun tidbits. But when it comes to naming the song of theirs they like the least, they’re surprisingly united on the answer — except for Nick Carter.
When Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, AJ McClean and Kevin Richardson were asked the question separately, they all named the same song: “If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself a Bad Boy),” which appears on their self-titled 1997 U.S. debut album.
“That was horrible,” Kevin says of the song. AJ adds, “That song should never have been recorded. It is the biggest piece of crap!”
“You know why the fans love that song? Because Nick is singing the whole doggone thing!” Brian reveals.
Which is why Nick, asked the same question, responded, “I don’t really have a song that I don’t like.”
By the way, “If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself a Bad Boy)” was written by Mutt Lange, a hit songwriter and producer who’s crafted songs for Celine Dion, Def Leppard, Britney Spears, Heart and his ex-wife, Shania Twain.
The Backstreet Boys track is just one of many songs Lange has written with parentheses in the titles. Others include Shania’s hits “(If You’re Not In It For Love) I’m Outta Here” and “The Woman In Me (Needs the Man In You).”
