Peter LindberghAn actress was born: Lady Gaga fulfilled her lifelong acting dreams this year, making her movie debut in Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born.
Gaga played Ally, an aspiring singer taken under the wing of hard-drinking music star Jackson Maine, played by Cooper. The film opened in October to a solid $41 million, putting it at number two at the box office.
The A Star Is Born soundtrack, also released in October, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. It marks the biggest chart week for a soundtrack since the #2 debut in 2015 of the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.
In November, Gaga won her first award for the film, when the National Board of Review named her Best Actress. A month later, she scored two Golden Globe nominations, one in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama category and the other in the Best Original Song category for “Shallow,” her duet with Cooper. A Star Is Born racked up five Golden Globe nominations in total. “Shallow” also received Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Then came the SAG Award nominations. Gaga, Cooper and their co-star, Sam Elliott, were all nominated for individual SAG acting honors, while all the actors were collectively nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. A Star Is Born was the leading nominee in the movie category.
Also this year, Gaga announced a brand-new Las Vegas residency, Enigma, set to kick off December 28. The residency, taking place at the Park Theater at the new Park MGM resort, will include 23 dates and nine jazz and piano engagements.
The Enigma show is described as “a brand-new odyssey of [Gaga’s] pop hits built as an experience unlike any other,” while the jazz and piano show will feature stripped-down versions of her hits plus classics from the Great American Songbook.
On the personal side, Gaga confirmed her engagement to talent manager Christian Carino this year. The two first confirmed they were dating in February 2017.
Gaga also came dangerously close to losing her home to her the L.A.-area Woolsey fire. Her home was spared, but Gaga made it her mission to help other residents in need.
