ABC/Image Group LADick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve has been around for over 40 years, so it’s easy to forget that if you don’t live in the U.S., you’ve probably never heard of it. That was certainly Dua Lipa‘s experience…before the British star was booked to perform on this Monday night’s show, that is.
“I didn’t see it growing up ’cause they don’t show it in the U.K.,” she tells ABC Radio. “I had only become more familiar with it as I found out more about the festive shows that happen in the U.S. — Dick Clark being the biggest one.”
Dua says the British equivalent of New Year’s Rockin’ Eve — sort of — is the annual Top of the Pops New Year’s special. “That’s what I’ve been telling all my friends…’I’m basically doing the Top of the Pops, but the American version,'” she laughs.
However you describe it, the “New Rules” singer says the “exciting” gig “just gives me another chance to come out and perform my songs and interact with my fans and see them.”
Dua will perform on the Hollywood segment of the ABC telecast, along with Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Charlie Puth and more. It’ll be a great way to wrap up an eventful 2018 for Dua, who says, “I feel like there’s a little something from every month that I’m so grateful for.”
“Early this year, I did the Brit [Awards]…that was a really big deal for me,” she tells ABC Radio. “I’m doing Dick Clark, I got to do SNL, I got to travel the world and…visit so many places that I hadn’t been before.”
“So it’s been, safe to say, the best year of my life so far!”
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest starts at 8 p.m. ET on Monday.
