Sam FisherIf you think that all of Ed Sheeran‘s amazing success this past year has gone to his head, think again. According to a guy who’s been on the road him, Ed’s still the same down-to-earth dude he’s always been.
Lauv [sounds like “chow”], who broke out this year with his hit “I Like Me Better,” spent some of 2017 and 2018 opening for Ed, both in Asia and on his North American stadium tour. He tells Billboard that when he met Ed, he was “definitely nervous,” but adds, “He’s, I would say, the nicest person I’ve met in my life. And not even as an artist, just as a person.”
“He’s nice, he’s funny, he works hard. He’s not caught up in bulls***,” gushes Lauv. “I think there’s so much competition, and there can be weirdness in the music industry, but he’s all love and makes great music. I have a lot of love and respect and appreciation for him.”
Aside from opening for Ed, Lauv also did a sold-out headlining world tour, and he tells Billboard, “Those were some of the most magical moments…playing to sold-out crowds, meeting my fans. Every time, I kind of expected nobody to be there. So that really made it real for me.”
Asked to describe a memorable taxi, Uber or Lyft ride from 2018, Lauv tells Billboard that once, he got in the car and his own song was on the radio.
“I was just [kidding] around and was like, ‘Ugh, I hate this song,’” he laughs. “And the guy was just like, ‘Same,’ and changed the channel. I didn’t say anything!”
