Madonna pays tribute to “trailblazer” Penny Marshall: “So lucky to have known you”

Columbia PicturesMadonna has added her own heartfelt words to the many tributes pouring in for filmmaker Penny Marshall.

The singer, who was directed by Marshall in the 1992 film A League of Their Own, posted a photo of herself with Marshall on the movie’s set.

“So Lucky to have known you and worked with you Penny Marshall!!” Madonna wrote. “Your Talent was as BIG as your Heart! and you were a Trailblazer For Women In Hollywood! GOD BLESS you and your family!”

Madonna played the sassy baseball player Mae “All the Way Mae” Mordabito in A League of Their Own and also contributed the song “This Used to Be My Playground” to the soundtrack.

Marshall, also known for her role in the ‘70s sitcom Laverne & Shirley and for directing films like Big, The Preacher’s Wife and the Oscar-nominated Awakenings, passed away Monday night from diabetes complications at age 75.
