Peter LindberghIt’s been almost two months since A Star Is Born hit theaters and even longer since Lady Gaga wrapped shooting. But in an actress roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter, Gaga admits she’s “still recovering” from playing Ally.
She says playing an up-and-coming singer took such a toll on her because she had to drop her on-stage persona and go deeper. She says she gave Ally “something that I don’t always give as musician.”
“The things that are inside my private life, that [fans] don’t know about me, those were the things that I was really using,” Gaga says. “All the reasons that I’ve put this armor on for so many years, all the things I’ve been running from? I’m gonna use that.”
She also made sure to change Ally’s stage presence as well.
“I do certain things when I sing and I’m on stage,” Gaga says. “I have a certain way about me when I perform, but I wanted [it] to be pointed out [to me] when I was doing something that was would look decidedly like me, the way that my fans see me, because I wanted her to be so different.”
Ultimately, she felt safe enough to play the character because director and co-star Bradley Cooper created a “sanctuary of trust” on set.
“So when I saw that trust with Bradley, I said, ‘OK, I’m going to have to become someone that I do not have complete control over,’” she says.
She adds, “I felt really excited and really ready for this part.”
Gaga recently won her first major award for her role in the film: The National Board of Review named her Best Actress.
