Brian ZiffShawn Mendes‘ Rolling Stone cover story is titled “Shawn Mendes: Confessions of a Neurotic Pop Idol.” Now, the singer is weighing in on how he feels he was portrayed in the story — and he’s not entirely happy.
The article spends a lot of time focusing on Shawn’s many anxieties, such as his fear of becoming irrelevant, his desire to prove once and for all that he’s not gay and his concern that he has “no game” when it comes to women. But the Canadian star has now taken to Twitter to clarify that he’s much more than a bundle of issues.
“Of course i have my insecurities and struggles but that’s just one part of me. Sometimes the positive side of a story doesn’t always get fully told and I wish it had here,” Shawn writes.
“I love what i do and i love you guys so much,” he adds.
But it’s not like Shawn’s insecurities and struggles don’t have a silver lining. In the story, he details how his crushing anxiety led to him writing his smash hit “In My Blood” — and how gratified he was to see the tweets roll in from fans who told him that they, too, suffer from anxiety.
“I started crying, and I was just like, ‘This is why you talk about s**t that actually is real,’” he tells Rolling Stone. “I was like, ‘God, don’t ever…question the feeling of writing the truth again.’ ”
