NBC/Trae PattonThe knockout rounds continued on Monday’s edition of The Voice, a night that saw coach Jennifer Hudson steal back an artist she lost to Blake Shelton.
Also on Monday, Blake and Kelly Clarkson used “The Save” to hang on to one of their artists.
Artists from Adam Levine’s team also competed.
First up, Team Kelly’s country singer Chevel Shepherd, 16, tackling the Dixie Chicks’ Travelin’ Soldier,” battled 15-year-old blues singer Sarah Grace, covering Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Clarkson urged Chevel to capitalize on her innocence and the amazing tone she has at such a young age. Carey wanted her to focus on getting the story across, as well. Kelly had little critique for Sarah Grace, except to offer a few tweaks to her arrangement. Kelie praised both for their bold, fearless” song choices, but declared Chavel the winner. However, she also used “The Save,” to keep Sarah Grace in the competition as well.
Next, Team Adam’s DeAndre Nico, delivering a soulful take on Hunter Hayes’ “Wanted,” went head-to-head with Jake Wells, singing “Yellow,” by Coldplay. Adam said DeAndre needed to add more “refinement” and “sprinkles” to the arrangement. Jake, according to Adam, needed to add “something beautiful” to the song and make it his own. DeAndre won the round and advances to the live rounds. Jake was sent packing.
Team Jennifer paired her “babies” — 16-year-old Anthony Arya and Kennedy Holmes, 13, performing Jim Croce’s “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels),” and Pink‘s “What About Us,” respectively. Hudson and Carey agreed Anthony needed to make the tune sound more like “a plea.” Jennifer noted that Kennedy was a little “too polished” and needed to show a little more vulnerability. After agonizing over her decision, Hudson picked Holmes the winner, sending her to the live rounds. Arya heads home.
Team Blake’s first match-up of the night was between Kirk Jay, singing Brett Young’s “In Case You Didn’t Know,” and Colton Smith, tackling LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade.” Smith ran into problems during his performance when he couldn’t hear himself over the band, but the coaches all felt he made a great recovery. Ultimately, Blake declared Kirk the winner, but Jennifer — who had Colton stolen from her by Blake — was impressed by his professionalism and used her only steal to send him to the lives as well.
Adam’s final pairing of the night pitted Delaney Silvernell, covering Kesha’s “Praying,” against Steve Memmolo, performing “Unaware,” by Allen Stone. Mariah advised Delaney to “let go of her inhibitions and emote.” Meanwhile, Steve, according to Mariah and Adam, needed to “deliver the emotion” of the song and “get behind it.” Basing his decision on who he felt was “ready right now,” Adam picked Steve to advance to the next round. Delaney’s time on The Voice is over.
Blake’s final knockout was between Chris Kroeze, covering “Burning House, by Cam, and Michael Lee, singing The Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post. Blake and Mariah were pleased with both Chris and Michael’s performances, and Shelton predicted a good battle and a tough choice waiting for him at the other end. The winner was decided with the flip of a coin, which gave the victory to Michael. However, Shelton had a save left, and used it to keep Chris in the competition as well. They both advance to the live rounds.
