“[K]eep your tired opinions to yourself”: Alessia Cara defends MTV EMA wardrobe choice

Def Jam RecordingsAlessia Cara sang her current single, “Trust My Lonely,” at the MTV EMAs Sunday night in Bilbao, Spain, and took home the MTV EMA Best World Stage trophy for her performance in Singapore earlier this year.  But rather than celebrating her victory, one fan decided to criticize Alessia for what she wore — in turn earning a serious rebuke from the Canadian star.

Alessia took the stage in an oversized gray suit and tie, which she also wears on the cover of her upcoming album, The Pains of Growing.  In response, one fan wrote, “Ok @alessiacara we get it women can dress in suits as well and still feel good about themselves but it’s getting kinda old wear something else when your performing.”

Alessia responded, “that is what I’m wearing for this album as it represents something to me. no it doesn’t fit, no it isn’t particularly flattering, but it’s what I’m putting on while I sing my songs I’ve worked incredibly hard on. open your minds or keep your tired opinions to yourselves.”

As fans cheered her response and criticized the other fan for daring to tell a woman what she should and shouldn’t wear, Alessia added, “I don’t like giving attention to negative comments, but I just want to log onto my twitter & be able to talk to my supporters without seeing the same s**t about what I wear.”

“I work too hard as a writer and artist to be reduced down to the girl who dresses bad,” Alessia concluded. “Do something else!”

The Pains of Growing will be out November 30.
